After the holidays one of the most common New Year’s resolutions is losing weight. If you’re considering joining a gym this year ask these ten questions before signing on the dotted line.
Joining a gym or health club can be a major purchase, so first check out www.bbb.org/search to see how your club rates. Ask the gym and yourself the following questions before signing up for a membership:
Five questions to ask the gym:
What are the terms? Introductory offers lure new members – ask what the price will be after the introductory period is over.
Will my membership renew automatically? You may have to take specific steps to cancel.
How can I get out of my contract? Ask what specific steps you need to take to cancel your membership.
What happens if I move? The gym’s policy may depend on how far away you’re moving and if they have locations in that area.
What happens if the gym goes out of business? Ask the gym to explain what will happen to your money if they suddenly go out of business.
Five questions to ask yourself when joining:
What are my fitness goals? This will help you select an appropriate facility. If you have a serious health condition, consult with a medical professional first.
Is this location convenient? If the gym is across town, you’ll be less likely to work out.
Can I really afford this every month? Consider your budget and do the math before you join to make sure you can afford a gym membership – now and after the intro price.
Am I feeling pressured to join? Don’t give in to high-pressure sales tactics. A reputable gym will give you enough time to read the contract thoroughly, tour the facilities, and make an informed decision.
Did I get everything in writing? Read the contract carefully, make sure all verbal promises made by the salesperson are in writing.
